Form: From Motif to Sonata
A study of musical form, moving from its smallest building blocks to larger-scale structures — from simple forms through suite, minuet, and sonata.
Format: combination of group, private, and workshop sessions.
Topics covered:
- Fundamental concepts: motif, theme, melody, figure, phrase (Satz), and period
- Developmental techniques: inversion, retrograde, and sequence
- Study and analysis of larger musical forms, by ear and by score
The aim is for students to independently analyze the structure and form of musical works through listening and score study, and to apply the principles and techniques learned to compose their own coherent, intentional pieces.
